Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Hours: Approximately 10–25 hours/week
Schedule: Variable; primarily evenings and weekends
Compensation: $21-24. New staff should expect to start at the entry point of the range.
Compensation will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated skills.

Work Schedule
This position requires flexible availability to support SCH's busy evening and weekend schedule.

Typical shifts may include:
Monday–Friday: 4:00–9:30 PM
Saturday: 8:30 AM–6:30 PM
Sunday: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM
Occasional extended hours on weekends for special events and programs

SCH anticipates hiring two Building Hosts who will share coverage across these hours.

About Sellwood Community House
Sellwood Community House (SCH) has been an independent nonprofit community center since
August 2019, following nearly 100 years as a Portland Parks & Recreation community center.
Today, SCH serves thousands of community members each year through early childhood
education, afterschool programs, summer camps, enrichment classes, recreation, arts, and
community events.
Our mission is to connect, inspire, and transform our community through recreation. We create

Position Summary
The Building Host is a front-line hospitality role responsible for creating an exceptional
experience for everyone who enters Sellwood Community House.
This is not a traditional front-desk or recreation-center check-in position. The Building Host is an
active, visible presence throughout the building, much like a great hospitality professional in a
busy café or restaurant. This person welcomes people, builds relationships, anticipates needs,
solves problems, supports activities and helps create an environment where people feel
genuinely cared for.

SCH hosts a wide range of evening and weekend activities, including author readings, concerts,
film series, community workshops, classes, clubs, birthday parties, event rentals and community
gatherings. Building Hosts help bring these experiences to life by assisting with setup,
welcoming and engaging guests, supporting activities while they are underway and helping
break down and reset spaces afterward.

The Building Host also operates merchandise and concessions, with sales helping support
SCH's ability to remain open and accessible for all community members.

Most importantly, this role helps SCH turn people who are simply using the building into people
who are connected to, engaged with and invested in the SCH community.

Reports To: Experience Manager

Works Collaboratively With: Events & Rentals Coordinator, Community Engagement Manager, Operations and program
staff, instructors, renters, volunteers, vendors, community partners and other SCH staff.

Essential Responsibilities

• Hospitality & Guest Experience:

  • Welcome every person who enters SCH with warmth, attentiveness and genuine
    hospitality.

  • Be visible and engaged throughout the building rather than stationed at a desk.

  • Provide exceptional customer service and proactively identify ways to improve a guest's
    experience.

  • Get to know regular participants, renters, instructors, volunteers and community
    members.

  • Help visitors navigate the building and feel comfortable, informed and cared for.

  • Answer questions and help people discover SCH's programs, events, mission and
    opportunities to participate.

  • Identify and resolve small issues before they become larger problems.

  • Maintain a welcoming, clean, organized and well-presented environment

• Event and Program Support

  • Ability to remain calm and helpful in a busy, changing environment.

  • Dependable and punctual.

  • Comfortable interacting with a diverse range of people.

  • Ability to work regular evenings and weekends.

  • Commitment to creating welcoming and inclusive community experiences.

Preferred:

• Experience in hospitality, restaurants, cafés, retail, events, recreation, customer service,
  or a related field.

• Experience with point-of-sale systems and cash handling.

• Experience supporting events or working in a community-based organization.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal Building Host is someone who genuinely likes people and enjoys taking care of them.
They are naturally observant, energetic, friendly and proactive. They notice when someone
looks lost, when a room needs attention or when a guest could use a little extra help, and they
act on it. In short: they understand the difference between processing a visitor and welcoming a
guest.

They are equally comfortable greeting a first-time visitor, chatting with a regular, helping set up
chairs for a concert, selling concessions during a film, assisting a renter or staying late to help
clean up after an event.
Most importantly, they understand that every interaction is an opportunity to help someone build
a deeper connection with Sellwood Community House.

Success in This Role

After one year, a successful Building Host will have:

• Created consistently warm, welcoming and exceptional experiences for SCH visitors,
  participants, renters and community members.

• Built genuine relationships with regular users of the building.

• Helped SCH's evening and weekend events feel organized, energetic and hospitable.

• Supported successful setup, hosting and breakdown of events and activities.

• Helped visitors understand SCH's mission and discover programs, events and other
  opportunities to participate.

• Contributed to merchandise and concession sales that support free evening
  programming.

• Identified and addressed guest needs, building issues and opportunities to improve the
  experience.

• Helped people see SCH as more than a facility they use, but as a community they can
  join, participate in and support.

• Contributed to a building culture where people feel welcomed, known, connected and excited to come back.
